ELDER & DEPENDENT ADULT ABUSE SYMPOSIUM 2023

RIVERSIDE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SOCIAL SERVICES ADULT SERVICES DIVISION THURSDAY JUNE 1, 2023

Riverside Convention Center Riverside, CA

02 2023 Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Symposium

INTRODUCTION

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), commemorated on June 15 every year, is an opportunity for people and organizations around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. WEAAD was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

WEAAD is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. In a society that values the just treatment of all people, WEAAD reminds us that elder abuse has implications for all of us, and so it’s important to find the right solutions to it. WEAAD is a call- to-action for society’s individuals, organizations, and communities to educate each other on how to identify, address and prevent abuse so we can all do our part to support everyone as we age.

Nick Buettner is the Vice President of Blue Zones. He is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the Blue Zones Project in all Blue Zones Communities and corporate sites across the US. In 2004, Blue Zones teamed up with National Geographic and the world’s best longevity researchers to identify pockets worldwide where people live measurably longer and better. In these “Blue Zones” they found that people reach age 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the United States. After identifying five of the world’s Blue Zones, the Blue Zones team and National Geographic took teams of scientists to each location to identify lifestyle characteristics that might explain longevity. They found that the lifestyles of all Blue Zones residents shared nine specific characteristics. They call these characteristics the Power 9®. His work with the Blue Zones expedition team provided him a first-hand, in-person glimpse of these Blue Zones — places that have the greatest life expectancy and where more people reach age 100 than anywhere else in the world. Susan DeMarois was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as Director of the California Department of Aging (CDA) effective November 1, 2021. As Director, DeMarois is committed to stakeholder engagement; equity and inclusion; and system transformation to prepare our state for the year 2030 when one in four Californians will be aged 60 or older. Prior to joining CDA, DeMarois led public policy and advocacy for the national Alzheimer’s Association in California, serving as the nonprofit organization’s registered lobbyist in Sacramento where she advocated for legislative, budget, and regulatory changes at the state capitol. The organization led the effort to enact the first dementia early detection initiative in the nation focused on the Medicaid population: SB 48 (Limón) signed into law by Governor Newsom. DeMarois served as an appointee to Governor Newsom’s Alzheimer’s Prevention and Preparedness Task Force, chaired by former First Lady Maria Shriver, in addition to theMaster Plan for Aging Stakeholder Advisory Committee, a workgroup established by Executive Order. In addition, she represented the Alzheimer’s Association on the CalHHS Agency Secretary’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Advisory Committee. Before working for the Alzheimer’s Association, DeMarois led government and community relations for the UC Davis Health System where she gained deep health policy and clinical workforce experience. Early in her career, she worked for LeadingAge California, the professional trade association representing not-for- profit housing, residential care, and skilled nursing providers. A graduate of California State University, Chico, DeMarois started her career working for the U.S. Congress and California State Assembly. She is a proud mom to two adult daughters and draws inspiration for her work from her own mom’s experience with dementia.

The Embodied Labs experience is an immersive learning system which allows participants to view the world through the perspective of older adults and caregivers. Virtual reality allows you the opportunity step into someone else’s shoes–to deeply understand the lived experience of another person. Knowing what to expect, how to relate, and how to respond allows you to communicate more clearly, support more confidently, and serve with greater purpose. Because real understanding isn’t just about knowing. It’s about feeling. There are several labs available and at the 2023 Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Symposium. Participants will be able to experience the following labs: 1) Alfred, a 74-year-old African American man with macular degeneration and high frequency hearing loss as he spends time with family, visits the doctor, and receives a diagnosis. As Alfred goes about his daily life, the learner will understand how deficits in hearing and vision affect communication and impact emotional well-being. 2) Frank, a 72-year-old Caucasian man, beginning a few months after his wife’s passing.
