PRESENTER
Grief, Loss, and Healing Breakout Session 3: 1:00 PM – 1:50 PM
This workshop will discuss the many types of losses elders may experience throughout their life from loss of friends to loss of independence. There will be a review of the symptoms of grief and what it may look like in both the short-and-long-term and the stages of grief including a discussion how working through the stages is not necessarily a linear event. We will look at common areas where people may get stuck in grieving and how to overcome those obstacles.

PRESENTER
APS Professionals are dedicated to the safety and well-being of older and dependent adults. This may include engaging the client in addressing harmful behaviors that the clients may be engaging. Whether it be drug use, alcoholism, or having a poor diet; many times, social workers are unraveling years of behaviors that are damaging. What happens when a social worker cannot convince a client to completely stop these behaviors? Harm reduction is a myriad of policies and practices with intent primarily to reduce the adverse health, social and economic consequences of drug consumption. These strategies can also be used with other types of self-destructive behaviors. In this presentation, Jessica will introduce the concepts of harm reduction, the societal implications and perceived biases around harm reduction, harm reduction successes and challenges, and finally, discuss implementing harm reduction strategies within your jurisdictional organization and/or social worker practice specifically related to safety planning.
