The Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) provides vital services and assistance to protect and empower individuals and families across Riverside County. DPSS offers access to wide range of benefits including food, cash, health care coverage and employment assistance through programs such as CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal and Welfare to Work. In addition, the department provides services to protect at-risk children and adults from abuse and neglect, foster and adoption services and access to in-home caregivers for older and vulnerable adults. DPSS was established in 1923 with two employees. Today, it comprises 4,300 social workers and support staff who coordinate with community partners to improve the health, safety, independence, and well- being of those we serve. Last year, DPSS served more than one million residents in Riverside County, the nation’s tenth most populous county with 2.5 million residents. Over 98,000 workers comprise the membership of SEIU Local 721 — making it the largest public sector union in Southern California. SEIU Local 721 represents people working in hospitals, foster care, mental health, courts, law enforcement, libraries, street services, beach maintenance, sanitation, water treatment, parks services and watershed management. The Riverside County Office on Aging is charged with developing a system of care that offers safety net services for vulnerable older persons and adults with disabilities. OoA has over 27 different programs and services aimed at promoting and supporting a life of dignity, well-being, and independence, including caregiver support and assistance; short- and long-term case management; and assistance with nutrition, transportation, and care transition services.
