Interview and Interrogation Techniques for Elder Abuse Victims, Witnesses, and Suspects Breakout Session 3: 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM In this lecture, attendees will explore the spectrum of neurodegenerative disease states that profoundly impact cognition and functioning. Dr. Franklin will guide discussions on the distinctions between mild and major neurocognitive disorders, delving into prevalent neurodegenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Vascular Dementia, Frontotemporal Lobar Dementias, Parkinson’s Disease, Lewy Body Disease, and other less common conditions. The session aims to aid in distinguishing the diverse symptoms associated with each disease state, alongside an examination of the terminal nature and time course of these conditions. Additionally, participants will engage in discussions surrounding treatment options for these illnesses, considering potential variations in therapeutic approaches. Attendees will also have the opportunity to define the different types of neurodegenerative illnesses, gain an understanding of the symptomatology inherent to these diseases, explore various assessment tools to aid in defining different illnesses, and examine the costs and expenses associated with caring for individuals with dementia. Furthermore, they will understand the trajectory from initial diagnosis to end-of-life care and learn the basics and interpretation of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). When Special Days Make You Stressed: Helping Older Adults Cope Breakout Session 3: 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM Led by a licensed therapist, this educational workshop normalizes the feelings of sadness and worry that older adults may experience leading up to special events (holidays, anniversaries, etc.). We will discuss how to help older adults plan for triggers and connect to various forms of support to help manage the difficult emotions brought up by these events.
